Summary
We are looking for an experienced System & Software Architect to lead the definition, development, and delivery of complex software-intensive space systems. In this role, you will take technical leadership of projects throughout the complete lifecycle, from understanding customer and mission needs to defining robust system and software architectures, guiding implementation activities, and ensuring successful verification and validation.
You will be responsible for translating customer requirements into system and software design requirements, maintaining end-to-end requirements traceability, and steering multidisciplinary engineering teams from conceptual design through detailed development and integration. Working closely with project managers, customers, partners, and stakeholders, you will ensure the overall technical coherence, performance, and compliance of the delivered solution.
Additional responsibilities include supporting technical reviews, coordinating and participating in system and subsystem verification campaigns, identifying and mitigating technical risks, and driving architecture and design decisions across software, hardware, and operational domains. As the technical lead, you will play a key role during customer engagements, capture activities, and proposal phases, contributing to the definition of innovative solutions for space, defence, and high-reliability applications.
The ideal candidate combines strong systems-engineering fundamentals, software architecture expertise, and hands-on development experience with the leadership skills required to successfully deliver complex multidisciplinary projects.
Responsibilities
- Analyse customer, mission, stakeholder, and operational needs and translate them into system and subsystem requirements.
- Lead the technical definition and architecture of software-intensive space systems throughout the project lifecycle.
- Define, allocate, and maintain system and software requirements while ensuring full traceability between stakeholder needs, architecture, implementation, and verification.
- Develop and maintain system architectures including software, interfaces, simulation environments, and operational concepts.
- Provide technical leadership for embedded and safety-critical software developments targeting space-qualified and high-reliability systems.
- Establish verification and validation strategies, including functional, performance, environmental, and acceptance testing activities.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks and architectural trade-offs throughout the development lifecycle.
- Support system and subsystem integration, verification, qualification, and test campaigns.
- Lead technical reviews and ensure overall technical coherence, performance, reliability, and compliance of delivered systems.
- Support proposal preparation, technical capture activities, bid development, and customer technical discussions
Ideal Experience
- A Master's degree or higher in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, software engineering, mechatronics, electromechanical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in space systems engineering, software systems engineering, or the development of complex software-intensive products.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a technical-lead, lead-systems-engineer, or system-architect role.
- Proven experience managing the complete engineering lifecycle, from requirements definition and architecture development through integration, verification, validation, and qualification.
- Practical experience translating customer and mission needs into system, subsystem, and software requirements.
- Solid understanding of system engineering principles, requirements management, interface management, and engineering governance for high-reliability systems.
- Experience defining and maintaining architectures for multidisciplinary systems involving software, electronics, hardware, and mechatronics.
- Knowledge of system verification methodologies, test planning, and qualification approaches for space systems.
- Ability to identify technical risks, perform trade-off analyses, and support root-cause investigations for complex systems.
- Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation, architecture descriptions, interface specifications, verification plans, and review data packages.
- Proficiency with systems engineering and requirements management tools (e.g. Jama)
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and engage with customers.
- Fluency in English.
Desired Skills
- Avionics and mechatronics, software architecture/system engineering.
- Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
- Requirements management and traceability tools such as Jama.
- Safety-critical software development and software lifecycle management.
- Embedded software development (Bare-metal, RTEMS, FreeRTOS, RT-Linux, or equivalent).
- Software architecture and software product development.
- Robotics and autonomous space systems.
- Simulation environments such as Simscape, Gazebo, Blender, Omniverse, or equivalent.
- Reliability engineering, FMEA, and risk-management methodologies.
- Agile software-development methodologies.
- Continuous integration, DevOps, software-quality, and cybersecurity practices.
- ESA, ECSS, EDA, or defence-programme experience.
- Technical proposal preparation and customer-facing technical leadership.
- Research and development project leadership and technology-roadmap definition.
Interested, but not sure you meet every single requirement? Research shows that men will apply to jobs when they meet only 60% of the requirements, but women and other minority groups may only apply if they're sure they meet 100%. If you were turning away because you don't meet 100%, well, we'd still like to hear from you - tell us how you're the best fit for the requirements you're sure you meet.
To accept positions and relocate to Redwire Space, candidates must
- have a police/criminal record check, that is not more than six months old.
- be approved by ITAR regulations.
- be uploaded to the greenhouse portal.
- apply directly or be uploaded by a recognized partner.
